Fine Arts
Department Philosophy
The BPS Fine Arts Department believes that arts education is essential to developing creative, confident, and well-rounded individuals. Through experiences in visual art and music, students develop creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, perseverance, collaboration, and the confidence to express their individual voices. The arts provide opportunities for students to explore diverse cultures and perspectives, connect with the experiences of others, and better understand themselves and the world around them. By valuing creativity, artistic process, purposeful practice, and reflection, we empower students to take risks, respond to feedback, think independently, and recognize the important role the arts play in their lives, communities, and society.
Approach to Teaching & Learning
Fine Arts instruction is grounded in active participation, creativity, exploration, practice, and reflection. Students develop artistic understanding through authentic experiences in creating, performing, responding, and connecting while building the technical and expressive skills unique to each discipline. Teachers create challenging and supportive learning environments that encourage experimentation, creative problem-solving, collaboration, purposeful practice, and individual expression. Students learn to set goals, persevere through challenges, respond to feedback, reflect on their growth, and take increasing ownership of their artistic development. Through individual and collaborative experiences, students build the confidence and skills to communicate ideas, appreciate multiple perspectives, and engage meaningfully with the arts.
