Mathematics Department
Department Vision
The BPS Mathematics Department believes that all students can develop the knowledge, confidence, and perseverance needed to be successful mathematicians. Mathematics education develops students who are conceptually grounded, mathematically literate, and able to apply their understanding to both real-world and abstract problems. Through reasoning, modeling, data analysis, and problem-solving, students learn to make informed decisions in a quantitative world. We strive to cultivate curiosity, precision, perseverance, and confidence so that students see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers prepared to apply their learning within and beyond the classroom.
Approach to Teaching
Mathematics instruction centers on meaningful problem-solving, mathematical discourse, and opportunities for students to actively construct understanding. Students engage in challenging tasks, make connections across mathematical concepts, use multiple tools and representations, and communicate and justify their reasoning. Teachers intentionally build from foundational skills toward conceptual understanding and application while using feedback and assessment evidence to guide instruction. Through collaborative and independent learning experiences, productive struggle, reflection, and appropriate support, students develop both mathematical proficiency and the confidence to persevere through increasingly complex problems.
