Social Studies
Department Philosophy
The BPS Social Studies Department believes that social studies develops informed, thoughtful citizens who are prepared to engage with their communities and the wider world. Through the study of history, geography, civics, and economics, students learn to ask meaningful questions, examine multiple perspectives, and think critically about the past, present, and future. Students develop empathy, civic responsibility, and global awareness while considering their own roles and responsibilities within a democratic society. By connecting knowledge with action, we prepare students to navigate complexity, participate respectfully in civic life, and contribute meaningfully to an interconnected world.
Approach to Teaching & Learning
Social Studies instruction is grounded in inquiry, evidence, respectful discourse, and real-world connections. Students investigate compelling questions, analyze primary and secondary sources, consider diverse perspectives, construct evidence-based claims, and engage in discussion and problem-solving. Learning experiences intentionally build disciplinary skills and content knowledge across grades while connecting historical study to contemporary issues and students' lives. Through collaborative learning, purposeful reading and writing, simulations, projects, and varied assessment experiences, students practice the critical inquiry, ethical reasoning, civil discourse, and community-mindedness necessary for informed citizenship.
