ATLAS: Alternative Teaching, Learning and Supports
Program Philosophy
The BPS ATLAS program believes that students thrive when they experience flexible, individualized learning opportunities that recognize their strengths, needs, identities, and potential. ATLAS empowers students to become confident, resilient, and self-efficacious learners who value their own place and the perspectives of others in the world. Through positive learning experiences, strong social-emotional supports, meaningful relationships, and partnerships with families, students develop greater ownership of their learning and the confidence to pursue their individual pathways. Ultimately, ATLAS prepares students to use their learning, experiences, and voices to contribute positively to their communities and a global society.
Approach to Teaching & Learning
Teaching and learning in ATLAS is flexible, personalized, relationship-centered, and organized around meaningful themes and essential questions. Students progressively explore identity, relationships with others, and their roles and responsibilities within society, with each year's learning building upon previous experiences. Instruction provides multiple pathways for students to engage with essential skills and demonstrate growth while receiving individualized academic and social-emotional support. Each year culminates in a capstone experience through which students apply and demonstrate their learning, reflect on their growth, and consider how their choices and voices can contribute to a more just, humane, and empathetic world.
