Department Philosophy

The BPS Science Department believes that science education should empower students to understand and question the world around them. Through the study of scientific concepts across disciplines, students develop critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and evidence-based reasoning skills that prepare them for future learning and informed citizenship. We believe students should see science as relevant to their lives, recognize its connections to diverse cultures and human experiences, and see themselves as capable participants in scientific thinking and discovery. Our classrooms value curiosity, collaboration, intellectual risk-taking, and a willingness to revise thinking in response to new evidence.

Approach to Teaching & Learning

Science instruction is centered on students actively constructing and refining their understanding through inquiry, investigation, modeling, discussion, and evidence-based reasoning. Learning experiences are intentionally scaffolded and connected, allowing students to build cumulative understanding while engaging with meaningful phenomena and complex problems. Students ask testable questions, analyze data, make their thinking visible, collaborate with others, and reflect on how new evidence changes their understanding. Through varied and differentiated learning experiences, teachers support students in moving beyond recall toward the thoughtful application of scientific knowledge while developing confidence, curiosity, and comfort with the uncertainty inherent in scientific inquiry.
