Department Philosophy
The BPS English Language Arts Department believes that literacy empowers students to understand themselves, connect with others, and engage thoughtfully with the world. Through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking, students develop into thoughtful, articulate, and confident communicators. We foster an appreciation for language and literature while helping students explore diverse perspectives, express their individual voices, and communicate with awareness of audience, context, and purpose. Through meaningful experiences with texts and writing, students develop the literacy skills, curiosity, empathy, and independence necessary for personal fulfillment, active citizenship, and success in an ever-changing world.
Approach to Teaching & Learning
English Language Arts instruction integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, and inquiry through meaningful and authentic literacy experiences. Students engage with diverse and thought-provoking texts, participate in collaborative discourse, write for varied purposes and audiences, and make connections among literature, their own experiences, and the wider world. Instruction balances explicit teaching and modeling with opportunities for choice, exploration, reflection, and student ownership. Through formative feedback, multiple ways of demonstrating learning, and appropriately scaffolded experiences, students strengthen their ability to read critically, communicate effectively, think independently, and use language with clarity and purpose.
